What Is STAR?
Success Through Active Role-modeling (STAR) was created by local businesspeople with the intent to recruit and train Role Models to support local junior high and high school students. By tapping into the talents and interests of other local businessmen and women, STAR is recruiting Role Models who will support a student's interest and noted aptitude in any field or endeavor by encouraging them to successfully navigate a pre-designed educational plan, the completion of high school, and the pursuit of additional training and/or education to improve and enhance that student's quality of life.
Who Works With STAR?
STAR, a sub-committee of the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, has partnered with Corsicana ISD and has begun working with Corsicana High School Students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination or AVID program. AVID, a national program, is geared toward students who academically fall in the middle, but are falling short of their academic potential. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.
How Can You Help?
(1) Volunteer as a Role Model.
Role Models are not tutors, but men and women who can provide a student positive, factual, and demonstrated experience in an area of the student's aptitude, interest, or both that the student, with parental consent and counsel, wishes to pursue. Before role models are partnered with students, free training is provided by STAR and Corsicana ISD on establishing relationships, building self-esteem, and communicating with teenagers.
(2) Volunteer as an expert.
An expert lends their knowledge and experience within their field to the STAR board and Role Models.
(3) Donate time, funds, or resources.
STAR is seeking donations to recruit Role Models, provide training, and continue their mission of ensuring that students graduate from high school and move on to further their education or begin a successful career.
