The STAR program provides opportunities and support so that students see beyond what is to what could be. These relationships with trained adults have proved to be instrumental in keeping students in school and in helping them to develop their career plans after high school. Matching STAR role models with students who have similar aptitudes and interests has allowed Corsicana ISD students to blossom in the district’s AVID program.
The STAR program offers at risk students exactly what research says works, an adult role model. In the short time Kerens ISD has been involved with STAR we have seen notable improvement in the STAR student’s academic performance, attendance and behavior. We look forward to future service of STAR role models to our at risk students.
The STAR organization provides our AVID students with a unique and powerful tool to be successful. STAR's Role Models give our AVID students the guidance and nurturing necessary for them to be successful not just in high school and college, but also in life. We are very proud to have STAR working with our students in Corsicana ISD.
The STAR program in Navarro County is a pathway of success for high school students. Participants in the program benefit from the knowledge and expertise of local businessmen and women who give their time generously to assist young men and women in advancing their educational aspirations. This partnership between business and education is notable and it shows promise in achieving very positive outcomes.
STAR has been one of the key elements in helping to transform our campus into one that is geared for student success. Corsicana High School is more than pleased with our partnership with your organization. Not only do we already see a sense of growing confidence in the students STAR helps to mentor, but we also see a rise in students successfully entering and completing rigorous classes such as Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit, ensuring an easier transition to college. This rise can be traced back to the students that your organization works with who would normally not be college going students. Additionally, your members have proven to be professional and follow strict confidentiality while working with our kids. We thank you for making our school a better place and helping to guide our students to a successful future.
Many of our students have incredible talent and knowledge. However, due to certain factors, they do not have the support outside of school to encourage furthering their education in their field of interest. The Success Through Active Role-modeling (STAR) program provides those students with a person dedicated to assisting them with educational and career plans as well as what to expect in order to achieve their goals and dreams.
As the AVID Coordinator at Corsicana High School, I have enjoyed an up-close view of the impact of the STAR Role Models, and the STAR organization as a whole, on the AVID students at CHS. I am constantly moved to see the community take an active interest in the students. Whether it's the encouragement or the accountability that the role models offer, or maybe a combination of both, I have witnessed profound personal growth in the students who have role models. A caring role model promotes self-confidence, shares life-experience and wisdom, and maintains high expectations for the student. For many students, the role model is the only source for such wonderful and vital influence. To me and my students, the role models and the STAR Board members are super-extraordinary people who enrich our lives. The interesting thing is that they are normal people with amazing hearts who recognize that each person can make a difference. |
